FAQs of Bass

How much does a bass weigh?
Most solid body basses weigh between 8 lbs. and 12 lbs. Acoustic bass guitars can weigh much less.

Are there some that are smaller?
Yes. These are known as short-scale basses. A "regular" bass has a 34" scale length, which is the distance from the bridge to the nut (the piece of plastic that holds the strings where the neck meets the head). A short-scale bass can have a scale length ranging from 30" to 33", making it easier to play if you have very small hands. Note that the bass may not be too much lighter, since many manufacturers use a normal-sized body with a short neck.

How long do the strings last?
It depends on your taste. If you like a classic, deep, dark tone, then they can last months or even years. If you like an extremely bright tone, then you might think they need replacing every couple of weeks. They are pretty tough, but factors that can cause them to wear out are a lot of retuning, sweaty hands, and the amount of use your bass gets. You should replace the entire set when you feel they need replacing, usually when you're not getting the sound you like.

Can I break the strings if I pluck them too hard?
Yes, but it's more likely that the stresses of everyday use will do more to wear them out. And over-tightening them can also cause them to break.

Can I play with a pick instead of using my right-hand fingers?
Yes! it all depends on the sound you want to get. Many bass players prefer the fatter sound that you get with your fingers. It hurts at first, but you'll build up calluses on your fingertips pretty quickly. Some punk and metal players like the extra attack that using a pick gives them. Learn to play with both. As you progress you'll figure what you like.

Should I buy a case for my bass?
You probably don't need a hardshell case right away, unless it comes with the bass. If you promise to be nice to the bass, you can buy what's called a "gig bag," which is a soft-sided case that your bass slips into. Gig bags have handles and (often) shoulder straps, plus pockets for your music books.

If the bass is sending an electrical signal to an amp, is it dangerous?
Most basses send a signal that is less than one volt – not enough to even feel However, any electric bass or guitar can shock you badly when it's plugged into an amp. You should never use a bass in the rain or in another wet place. Many musicians have been seriously hurt by electric shock while playing. Better safe than sorry!

How do I properly hold a bass?
You can rest a bass on your lap, or you can hang it from a strap that goes over your shoulder. Because basses are almost always heavier than guitars, you may want to use a wide strap (or one with extra padding), so that the weight doesn't cause the strap to hurt your shoulder.
